SERIOUS car accidents are on the rise in Ballarat, according to the latest data released by the Transport Accident Commission.
The newly released figures show that in the 12 months to October last year, the number of serious crashes hit 99, a 16 per cent rise from the previous yearly figure of 85.
That followed a figure of 83 serious crashes in the year before that.
However on a positive note, fatalities have been significantly reduced.
In the Ballarat police service area, which covers the Ballarat and Pyrenees local council areas, five fatalities were recorded in the 12 months up to April this year.
This is a significant reduction from the 11 fatalities in the previous 12 months.
However in the Moorabool service area, which covers Golden Plains, Hepburn and Moorabool shires, fatalities have quadrupled in the past two years.
There were 12 deaths on Moorabool roads in the same period, compared to eight in the previous year and just three fatalities before that.
