KEN Potter and Valerie Jackson expected to find their beloved greyhound dead when they returned home after the worst of the Carngham fires.

But three-year-old Dakky made it through, despite the flames coming within about a metre of her shelter on the edge of the property.

Her throat was so badly inflamed she couldn't eat or drink, and spent six days in the Ballarat Veterinary Clinic.

But Dakky is just one of Mr Potter and Ms Jackson's miracles. Their 12 horses, dozens of sheep, four samoyeds and a pony all survived.

While their neighbours lost most or all of their animals, the couple didn't lose any.
