A MAN accused of escaping from police custody in Ballarat has finally been extradited back to the city two years later.
Grant William Kelly, 21, appeared briefly in Ballarat Magistrates Court yesterday, where he sat in the dock flanked by police officers on either side.
In total Kelly is facing 83 charges including escaping from police custody and assaulting a police officer. There were also multiple driving, dishonesty and assault charges.
According to charge sheets obtained by The Courier, on May 12, 2010, Kelly was in the custody of police but outside a police jail when he escaped.
On the same day Kelly is also accused of assaulting Detective Senior Constable Rod Stepnell.
Kelly appeared in court after being extradited from South Australia, with new charges being laid yesterday.
Defence lawyer Mary Mangan made no application for bail on behalf of her client and Kelly was remanded in custody.
He is due to appear back in the same court on July 30.
