BALLARAT’S young people continue to show their determination to fight cancer with two Loreto College students recently raising $3200 for local research.
Matilda Seery and Kate Brierley took it upon themselves to raise funds and awareness for the Ballarat Cancer Research Centre and after a series of fundraising activities, they this week presented Professor George Kannourakis with a $3200 donation.
The pair engaged the support of the Loreto College student leadership team and organised cake stalls, raffles and a silent auction.
Their personal contribution was taking part in the ‘Be Brave and Shave’ event in March, during which they shaved their heads.
“We wanted to do something that not only raised much needed funds for the centre but also awareness amongst the Loreto College students,” Matilda said.
Community relations officer for Loreto College Matt Hustwaite congratulated the students on their efforts.
“To their credit, it was their idea and all of their hard work that has produced this great result,” he said. “Not only the head shaving in March but all of the other fundraising they have done between then and now.”
The Ballarat Cancer Research Centre is an independent organisation located within the St John of God Hospital. It is the largest non-metropolitan cancer research centre in Australia.
