Undermanned WestVic put up spirited performance - and win

WESTVIC avenged an early season loss to Geelong in Hockey Victoria men’s state league three on Saturday.

The Ballarat-based Bendigo Bank WestVic defeated Geelong 2-1 to hold down fourth position on the ladder.

And WestVic did it without a full-strength line-up, calling under-17s Ned Jackson and Max Ferrier to fill vacancies.

The WestVic defence was put under early pressure, but Chris Mitchell, Nic, Don and Michael Churcher stood firm.

Offensively, Chris Vaughan and Jamie Lovett proved a handful for Geelong down the right hand side, but could not convert this to the scoreboard.

Geelong opened the scoring and took a 1-0 lead into the second half.

Nathan Hargreaves and Liam Geraghty helped Westvic gain control and with the support of strikers Cale Rout and Cameron Jarry began to wear down Geelong.

WestVic squandered a number of opportunities and entering the last 10 minutes still trailed.

Captain Chris Vaughan finally provided the spark, scoring twice — the second with one minute to play — to get WestVic the three points.

WestVic now has a week off before facing Melbourne High School Old Boys in Ballarat on July 14.
