Sleeping rough to make it a little easier for others

BALLARAT business leaders will unite with 120 school students from grades 5 and 6 to give up their beds for a night to bring homelessness into the spotlight.

Nevett Ford Lawyers Inn Their Shoes SleepOut will take place on Friday, August 10, at the Ballarat Mining Exchange. The UnitingCare Ballarat event will raise money for the BreezeWay Meals Program and will invite people to discuss the issue of homelessness in Ballarat.

Police Inspector Bruce Thomas will participate for the first time this year and said he was a bit apprehensive about sleeping rough.

“We do see a little bit of homelessness and it’s an important issue that we should bring out into the open and talk about,” Inspector Thomas said.

City of Ballarat Mayor Mark Harris will also be giving up the comfort of his bed for the evening.

“It’s really interesting for the younger age group to participate and to build awareness about the issue,” Cr Harris said.

UnitingCare Ballarat event manager Anna Law said she hopes 200 people will participate on the night, and she aims to raise $10,000.
