He said there was significant history in the southern suburb stretching back to the gold rush era.
“Here is a piece of work that recognises that,” Cr Hudson said.
The Sebastopol Heritage Study by consultancy firm Context Pty Ltd adds 22 new places assessed as being of local significance to the Ballarat Planning Scheme’s heritage overlay, along with four precincts.
These include the Albert Street Masonic Lodge, the Ballarat South Uniting Church Mission Centre, the former Ploughman’s Arms Hotel in Tait Street, the toll gate on the corner of the Glenelg Highway and Wiltshire Lane and the Sebastopol Town Hall complex.
It also names the RSL Memorial Hall, the Redan Primary School, the former Roxbury Dairy Farm and Smythes Creek Post Office on the Glenelg Highway and the Royal Mail Hotel.
Several houses are also listed, including Clontarn, the former Southern Star Mine manager’s residence.
Councillor Samantha McIntosh said the study also highlighted the “intactness” that other municipalities would crave.
