SIX gun sides will contest a new indoor soccer tournament on Saturday.
The Ballarat Futsal Centre in Wendouree will host the inaugural Futsal Ballarat Cup, its most significant tournament to date since opening last year.
Two Ballarat teams – a men’s team and a youth team, will compete against each other and four visiting teams from the Melbourne metro area and Swan Hill.
“It is the first time we’ve had it but it is planned to be an annual event,” Futsal area manager Corey Smith said yesterday.
“The idea is to give Ballarat players a tournament to play in.
We’ve established a calendar and we’re looking for it as a chance to compete ahead of the Victorian and national championships.
“The attraction for the visitors is that we have a new, international-sized court, which is uncommon in Victoria. It attracts the Futsal purists.”
The visitors include one team from Ashburton, which will field up to five players that were part of the Victorian state squad that contested the national championships earlier this month.
Smith was part of that Victorian state team, which is his link to Ashburton.
The other visiting teams from Melbourne are the Vic Vipers, and the Victorian Metro Youth team.
Matches start 10am, with the final beginning at about 5.30pm.
The Ballarat Futsal junior competition, meanwhile, kicks off February 8-9 at the Ballarat Futsal Centre.
