But after her selection in the MarmalAshes Australian XI at yesterday’s Buninyong Marvellous Marmalade competition, Ms Macdonald now wears the pride of a nation on her shoulders.
The competition attracted 130 entries from every state in Australia, all vying for team selection in the Australian XI - 11 jars of Australia’s best marmalade, plus a reserve 12th jar.
Three expert Country Women’s Association judges assessed each feature, from presentation and texture, to taste, with the winning jars announced during an award ceremony at Buninyong Town Hall yesterday.
The successful jars, including a Buninyong Village XI, will be sent to England to be judged at the International Marmalade Awards in Cumbria next month.
Ms Macdonald from Melbourne, who won best in show for her grapefruit marmalade, said it was all “very exciting”.
Buninyong Marmalade Association president Russell Luckock said Australia’s Marmy Army had beaten the English over the past two years.
“It’s a lot of fun for the community,” he said.
“Besides that, there’s a lot of fun in beating the English.
“Stung by their loss, we’re expecting them to come back. We’ve got to be ready for them.”
