Bright first day of school for Ryley after beating odds as baby

MARK and Suzie Verdoorn often wondered if they would see their beloved son Ryley accomplish what he did yesterday, his first day of school.

The six-year-old has defied the odds his whole life since being born 12 weeks premature in 2007, weighing a mere 1280 grams.

His mother Suzie yesterday expressed her delight and “elation” at seeing her beautiful boy happily walk off for his first day at Buninyong Primary School.

“There were certainly times in the past when Mark and I were uncertain of our little boy’s future and to see him go off for his first day of school was just incredible.”

She said the first thing Ryley said when asked about his day was how much he enjoyed his morning tea.

A difficult day for parents and children alike, Ms Verdoorn said they’d been looking forward to the day for months and had been going over old photographs to remember just how little he was.
