THE first Ballarat Futsal Cup was held at the weekend with Melbourne’s Cafuringa taking out the tournament.
Cafuringa, made up of many Vic Vipers V-League players, defeated Ashburton 3-1 in the final after being undefeated throughout the tournament at the Ballarat Futsal Centre.
Centre manager and Australian Futsal Association southern Australia director of coaching Corey Smith said the event showcased some of Victoria’s most talented players with teams from Ballarat, Melbourne and Swan Hill.
“I was really pleased with the progress that the Ballarat sides made throughout the day and it was a real eye opener for us in the first tournament.
“With 14 players across the two teams still under the age of 20, the future is looking very bright in this region,” Smith said.
Newly formed Ballarat teams Ballarat FC Men and Ballarat FC Youth placed third and fourth.
“Hopefully the tournament will promote the opportunities that are out there for juniors through AFA and attract more junior players to the centre for our weekly competitions,” he said.
“We start our junior season this Friday and Saturday and still have vacancies for new entries so we are hopeful the boost of hosting such quality sides here will help our push locally for participation in the sport.”
