Nine golds for junior athletes

NINE gold medals were taken by Ballarat competitors at the Victorian Junior Track and Field championships at the weekend.

Athletes from Wendouree Athletic Club, Ballarat YCW and Eureka Athletics Club attended the three-day event at Lakeside Stadium in Albert Park from February 8-10. 

Ballarat YCW representative Callum Baker achieved two gold medals, in the under-18 men’s discus throw and the shot put.

The Lake Bolac teenager was the only competitor from the area to achieve such a feat.

Wendouree’s Mitchell Thompson took first position in the 1500 metres under-20.

Nicholas Milton, from Wendouree Athletic Club, won gold in the men’s under-17 400 metres hurdles.

Milton also took two silver medals, in the 400 metres and the 110-metre hurdles. 

Young St Patrick’s College student Sam Williams, from Wendouree, won gold in the men’s 800 metres for under-14. 

Four Eureka athletes also achieved gold.

Ashleigh Wallace threw the javelin more than 30 metres to win the category in the women’s under-20 and Laura Hutchins won the women’s discus throw under-17 category with a throw of 34.24 metres. 

Jack Davies won the men’s under-20 5000 metres and Annaliese Bush jumped 10.81 metres in the women’s under-15 triple jump to take the number-one position.
