FORMER Ballarat jockey Michelle Payne is under investigation by Racing Victoria stewards for allegedly placing bets on international race meetings.

Payne, who has recently returned to race riding after a serious fall, is one of three licensed hoops under the microscope.
Stewards have asked Payne, Michael Walker and Anthony Darmanin to attend inquiries next Tuesday. The trio is to be questioned regarding bets placed on thoroughbred races, which are not on individual events in which they were riding.
Payne is alleged to have placed three unsuccessful bets on May 22, 2011 totalling $450, all involving dual Cox Plate champion So You Think and through a Sportsbet account registered in her name. Two of her alleged multi bets involved sports outside of racing.
Racing Victoria’s inquiries follow the completion of a lengthy investigation that began in mid-2012 with a routine audit of wagering service providers’ betting accounts. Darmanin’s alleged bets total $100 and Walker’s $57, including two $3 boxed trifectas and a $1 trifecta.
