Although fire crews have managed to control the fire and have established containment lines surrounding it, it is expected to continue burning for a number of days.
Forbes Road remains blocked off between Mahers Road and Old Melbourne Road, with crews remaining on scene throughout the day and night.
There were 16 firefighters from the DSE, CFA and Parks Victoria monitoring the blaze yesterday, lighting smaller fires to clear forest fuels.
A containment line has been set up around the perimeter of the fire ground, which is estimated to be 55 hectares in size.
DSE incident controller Jon Rofe said crews would remain on scene for days to ensure the fire did not flare up again.
He said smoke would be visible around the area for that time and urged people not to become concerned at the sight of smoke.
“There is a containment line set up around the perimeter and crews are burning out the untouched areas so it doesn’t catch on,” he said.
“Crews will be on scene for a number of days keeping a close eye on the fire.”
As yet there have been no reports of animal casualties, but some telecommunication towers sustained some damage.
