BALLARAT Golf Club won the 37th annual Eileen Ryan Bowl at Midlands Golf Club yesterday.
The club won the tournament in 2000 and 1980, but hasn’t been able to secure the trophy since.
Captain of the Ballarat team Carol Ryan said they were happy with the win, as they weren’t that easy to come by.
“We have a great relationship with Midlands, it’s a friendly rivalry,” Ryan said.
Julie Sewell said as much as you play your own game, you’re thinking about your teammates.
“You don’t play with the others, but as much as you play your own game, you know that your teammates are out there,” Sewell said.
Ryan scored 28, Sewell 35 and Pauline Murphy 37 in the stableford event, giving the team a total of 100 points, four clear of runners-up Warracknabeal.
Midlands president Irene McIntosh said it was a wonderful tournament with 25 clubs from all over Victoria and into New South Wales, and 98 individuals, competing.
The tournament honours Eileen Ryan, who was a loyal member of Mildlands Golf Club between 1934 and 1992, and who initiated the event.
Midlands captain Joan Bradbury said she set up the event to give country clubs the opportunity to have a good game before their own clubs opened, after closing for summer.
“That’s why Midlands plays their own event on the Wednesday, before hosting the event and not playing for the other clubs on Thursday and Friday,” Bradbury said.
