Golf: Morton makes it a 36-hole Cup hat-trick

BEVAN Morton won Buninyong Golf Club’s 36-hole annual tournament, the McRae Cup, for the third time at the weekend.

The Forest Resort Golfer first won the event in 2000 before winning it again in 2006, and said getting his name for a third time on the cup had been a goal ever since.

“I really enjoy the golf course and I’ve competed in a few of them,” Morton said.

“Winning it for the third time had been a main goal of mine for a few years, so I’m happy I’ve done that now. I’ll keep trying, but I’m satisfied with having won the three.”

The cup had been won three times by four other individuals, first in the 1930s, 1960s, 1970s and most recently by Chris Tatt in 1987, 1991 and 1993.

Morton shot 71 in the morning and 75 in the afternoon to finish with an aggregate score of 146, two over.

He has won the Forest Resort Club championship for two years running and also competed in the Victorian Open Qualifiers yesterday, missing out by four shots.

He said his next aims were to win the Creswick club championships once again and the Midlands annual tournament, which takes place next month.
