POLICE say guns have been targeted by thieves in the Ballarat region during the past 12 months.
Ballarat crime prevention officer Donna Parsons said there had been a spate of thefts from rural properties in recent months where firearms had been targeted.
Police are urging gun owners to take all reasonable precautions to ensure that firearms are kept safe, complying with legislated storage requirements.
Senior Constable Parsons said securing firearms out of sight would help prevent theft, but property owners should also lock their homes and sheds.
Anyone with information on suspicious people around properties can call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
