Her Majesty's historic graffiti mystery

WHO are JC Thomas and AL Holliday? That’s what staff at Her Majesty’s Theatre want to know after the discovery of historic graffiti inside the building’s roof.

Messages signed by two men, thought to be painters who worked on the building in the 1940s, were found on the wall during a tour given to new board members.

Marketing director Jon Harris said the tour was the first time he had been inside the roof.

“It was found in above the arch of the theatre,” Mr Harris said of the graffiti.

“Quite literally above the stage – we had to go up into the arch and up some more stairs into the roof."

“We think they were workers or painters for the theatre in 1949, the word ‘painter’ was written below JC Thomas’ name.”

Mr Harris said he hoped to find the men to learn more about the building’s history.

“From this there is one main question - we want to find out who these people are,” he said.

If you know anything about the messages, you can contact Her Majesty’s on 5333 5800.
