Ballarat link to cold case sex offences

A MAN with a possible Ballarat connection is believed responsible for four cold case sex offences, including two in Ballarat.

DNA advancements have led Sexual Crimes Squad detectives to link three out of the four cases, with the other similar in its modus operandi.

In Ballarat, a 14-year-old girl was riding her bike through Victoria Park on December 1, 1985 when a man standing beside his car grabbed her, drove her to a local tip, threatened her with a knife and forced her to drink beer before sexually assaulting her.

He then drove her to a second unknown location before releasing her near her home. He also approached the same girl in March 1986 as she walked from school but she screamed and ran home.

On January 30, 1986, a 13-year-old girl was sexually assaulted in a Peel Street supermarket car park after a man entered the car she was lying down in.

He is also believed to have sexually assaulted a 15-year-old girl in Heidelberg and a 16-year-old girl in Mentone.

In each case, the man used a green station wagon with a white roof. He is described as being between 20 and 30 at the time of the incidents, around 177 centimetres tall with light brown hair, a moustache and a fair complexion.

Police believe he may have some connection to the Ballarat area.

Detective Acting Inspector Darren Cooper said police were appealing for anyone with information to contact Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000.
