EVEN the weather was a little bit Irish, as Ballarat turned on a classic overcast Dublin sky for St Patrick’s Day yesterday.

But that only fuelled the celebrations as revellers donned their green, ordered a pint of Guinness and celebrated the day with as much enthusiasm as they could muster.
At Irish Murphy’s pub, ground zero of local shamrock celebrations, there was folk music, Irish dancing and plenty of the black stuff on offer.
Gary Wilson, owner of Irish Murphy’s, said St Patrick’s Day had exceeded their expectations for numbers.
“It’s been good. Lots of people have been dressed up in the colours. There’s been lots of hats,” he said.
He said the crowd had been mostly well-behaved, with only one patron asked to leave.
Ballarat Police said the day had been fairly quiet, with only three people locked up for drunkenness.
