Pedal power of Ballarat takes up the fight against cancer

THE lycra is out and the legs are shaved, as 12 representatives from Woolworth’s Ballarat and Ballarat Police limber up for a muscle-stinging challenge today.

The team of men and women have set up two stationary bikes in the front window of Cyclescape in Sturt Street and plan to ride 1000 kilometres in 24 hours.

Woolworth’s Ballarat assistant manager Shane Darroch said the challenge was a precursor to an October ride, when the same team will endeavour to ride 1000 kilometres from Ballarat to Portland and back.

“We hope to get as many people as possible down to show their support and hopefully donate some money,” Mr Darroch said.

“All money raised will go to local groups including Support4Cancer, TLC for kids, and Cops and Kids Camps.”

Mr Darroch said more than $60,000 was raised last year through an array of initiatives, including the ride.

The team hopes to complete the October ride within eight days.

“Cancer impacts on so many children and their families these days and it’s important to raise money and awareness for these great local groups,” Mr Darroch said.
