The Ballarat Triathlon Club has joined forces with the Australian government’s Active After-School Communities program to encourage Caledonian Primary School pupils to try triathlon.
Tomorrow, that seven week program will culminate in the Brimarco Ballarat Kids Triathlon at Ballarat Clarendon College.
“Prior to the AASC Triathlon program at the school, most of the kids would never have considered getting involved. Now we have them lining up to have a go at the club triathlon event,” Caledonian Primary School principal Andrew Parry said.
About 100 junior triathletes from several schools throughout the region will contest the triathlon, over three different courses in what is purely a participation event with no prizes for winners or place getters.
Six year olds will complete a 25m swim, followed 1km cycle leg and 400m run.
Children aged seven to nine will undertake a 50m swim, 1.5km on the bike and a 500m run and those aged 10 to 15 years will combine a 100m swim, with a 2km cycle and a 800m run.
