Soon, Alan will wheelie be going places

In 1972, Alan Buchanan lost his leg and he admits that since then, exercise has taken a back seat.

The 62-year-old has always loved bikes, but his prosthetic leg has an annoying habit of falling off onto the road.

So earlier this year, his mates at the Ballarat East Community Men’s Shed came up with a way to help get Mr Buchanan back on the road.

The team has been working on a prototype tricycle, built from parts of four different bikes, which were donated to the men’s shed.

It’s hoped the prototype will be finished in about three weeks.

As a further boost to the project, local manufacturing business Brimarco saw a story in The Courier last month about Mr Buchanan’s new toy and decided to donate a shiny new tricycle.

Mr Buchanan said the donation has given him some ideas about what he wants for his custom-designed trike.

“I like the basket on the back and the handlebars,” he said.
