Third-placed 888 outlasted Gardner Homes 68-66 to almost certainly secure a finals berth with four rounds to play.
Neither team was able to gain any real momentum in the opening three quarters.
It appeared though that 888 had done enough to secure a win, getting out to a small lead.
However, Matt Hanson was not to be denied though and led Gardner back to tie up the game with less than a minute to go.
A last ditch attempt from Nathan Cavanagh did everything but drop and 888 held on.
Hanson piled on 15 points in the last quarter and 37 for the game, but it was still not enough.
888 rallied through Keena Young, Sean Massey and Ryan Stevens, who were able to get a basket when they needed it.
Young finished with 29 points and Massey 17.
Ballarat Audi Wildcats had a more comfortable 13-point win over WFI Dragons.
Wildcats pulled away early, with Lindsay Cole having a big game, scoring inside and out on his way to a game-high 27 points.
Dragons had an evenly balanced attack with Ash Constable leading the way with 16.
