A BALLARAT woman amassed more than $40,000 in fines when she drove on Melbourne toll roads without permission and then failed to pay the fines, a court heard yesterday.
Crystal Allen, 30, appeared in Ballarat Magistrates Court where she pleaded guilty to driving an unregistered vehicle in a toll zone.
The hefty charges, most of which were administration fees which continued to bank up when not paid, were dropped by more than $27,000 by magistrate Gerard Lethbridge.
The court heard Allen had driven on Melbourne toll roads for a consecutive period of time without adequate permission.
Representing herself, Allen blamed a lack of correspondence from the relevant bodies, while admitting what she did was wrong.
“I take full responsibility,” she told the court.
“It was something I shouldn’t have done. It was a silly, stupid decision.”
Mr Lethbridge, who appeared genuinely baffled by the amount of fines, ordered Allen to begin a monthly payment plan in lieu of prison.
Allen must now pay $250 a month until she has paid the reduced total of $13,780. She faces an immediate jail term of she fails to meet a payment.
