THE first baby born in Ballarat on Vietnam Veterans Day this year, Scarlett Burford, was given a certificate, flowers and a toy.
Vietnam Veterans Association of Australia vice-president Bill Akell presented the gifts to baby Scarlett’s parents Fiona and Aaron Burford.
Ballarat sub branch secretary Yvonne Thomas said the association had been awarding the first baby born on that a day a certificate and toy for almost 10 years.
“The parents were delighted we came, recognising it was a special day for their baby to be born,” Ms Thomas said.
“Hopefully the baby will grow up asking questions about the Vietnam War and learning about the significance of the day.”
She said many people from the Ballarat community served in Vietnam and many are still living in the community today.
Vietnam Veterans Day remembers Australians and New Zealanders who served during the Vietnam War and fought in Long Tan in 1966.
