POLICE have cleared and reopened the Ballarat Lodge Hotel and Convention Centre after a bomb scare earlier today.
Officers searched the venue for suspicious devices after a phone threat.
Main Road was closed between Lal Lal Street and Elsworth Street for about an hour but has now been unblocked.
CFA operations manager Gavin Hope said the threat was phoned in.
"Triple-zero in Melbourne received a call about midday from a man saying there is a bomb planted at Ballarat Lodge and it's programmed to go off within the hour," he said.
Mr Hope praised the courage of officers who searched the venue.
Commerce Ballarat chief executive officer Jodie Gillett said the CGU Commerce Ballarat business awards would go ahead as planned at the Lodge tonight.
"It's good, they've cleared the site so there's no issues at all," she said.
"I was a little bit nervous but we're lucky it's only a little hitch to add to the excitement."
Ms Gillett said the Lodge had been exemplary in their preparation, with food and other catering requirements organised well ahead of schedule.
