BALLARAT'S Michael Alsop and Ryan Dodshun are the new Australian Golden Gloves boxing champions after emerging successful at last week's titles held in Queensland.
The pair, coached by veteran Ballarat trainer Ian Fear, dominated throughout the tournament and won both their finals by knockout at the Acacia Ridge Hotel.
Alsop, fighting in the 60-kilogram lightweight division, defeated Western Australia's Bobby Kildyke in his first fight before taking just two rounds to dispatch of New Caledonia's Johnny Hexson in the final.
Dodshun had a tougher time of it against New Zealand amateur champion Arthur Thompson in the 91-kilogram heavyweight final.
Dodshun dominated the first two rounds of the fight before suffering a cut eye from a head clash at end of the second round.
Fear was able to stop the bleeding and the big power puncher eventually floored Thompson with two heavy right hands in the third round.
Alsop has now improved his win-loss record to 10-2, while Dodshun now sits at 9-4.
Fear was pleased with the performances of his two fighters, but lamented the late withdrawal of brilliant featherweight Zac Robertson (9-1), who suffered a bout of flu before the championships.
