BANDS are on stage competing for a Royal South Street title this week, with junior concert bands taking over yesterday.
More than 3000 secondary school students will perform at Her Majesty’s Theatre during the eight days of competition, which ends on Saturday.
Ballarat Christian College’s band Crescendo played modern and movie-themed music yesterday.
Year 10 student Maxine Goodwin performed with the band in its first year last year.
“We’ve improved a lot – we’ve been able to come together more,” she said.
Royal South Street marketing manager Emma Sbardella said Yamaha and Fine Music sponsored the week, providing instruments for students to use on stage, including vibraphones and glockenspiels.
“It gives students the chance to perform on high-quality instruments,” Ms Sbardella said.
Year 9 Ballarat Grammar School student and band captain Chris Milne plays the bassoon in the school’s concert band.
“We’ve been preparing since the beginning of term two,” Chris said.
He said the band performed last week in the Victorian Schools Music Festival.
