As part of the merger, the two universities will become Federation University Australia as of January next year.
A new logo for the university, maintaining the Eureka Flag used in the University of Ballarat logo, was released today.
It is anticipated the University of Ballarat Amendment (Federation University Australia) Bill will be passed by state parliament today, making the name change official.
Several MPs remarked on the controversy surrounding the new name this morning in parliament.
Ballarat West MP Sharon Knight said she had received concerns from students about the new name and its acronym – FU.
Nationals MP Russell Northe said the acronym might sound "a little bit hilarious" but the "jocularity" would only last a short time.
Ballarat East MP Geoff Howard said the name change had been a source of "great anxiety" and he had hoped for Eureka University.
