As a minor party candidate he doesn't have much of a chance of winning this Saturday, but that's not stopping the Lake Gardens local from giving it a crack.
"They were after someone in the area and I thought I'd put my hand up and see how I'd go for it," he said.
He conceded he didn't know much about running for parliament but wasn't keen on getting into bed with the major parties.
"I've been a member of the Sex Party for at least three, maybe four years now. Pretty much since they've started. I've always known about their policies and strongly believed in them."
Those policies include voluntary euthanasia, ending tax exemptions for religious bodies and decriminalising marijuana.
"It's out there, we all know it's out there. So it's definitely something that needs to be addressed and not just ignored like it has been in the past," he said.
Making dental health more affordable was also something Mr Mathieson was supportive of, as well as increasing funding for Ballarat's hospitals.
"Everyone I know is getting right behind me, I think we'll definitely do a lot better than at the last election," he said.
