The brothers, who grew up in Ballarat but now call Bendigo home, dominated Victoria’s premierships for several years and also figured prominently nationally.
They took over from the record-breaking Great Western father and daughter Peter and Kerryn Manning at the top of the tables.
The Douglas boys completed their first Victorian training-driving title double in 2007-08, when Daryl drove 380 winners and Glenn reached 147.
They achieved this feat four seasons running before Chris Alford stepped up to the plate to topple Daryl in the state drivers’ premiership in 2011-12. Glenn managed to stay at the top of the tree though.
It all however changed last season.
Despite having a massive 1014 starters, almost twice as many as any other trainer in Victoria, Glenn (118) had to settle second behind Mildura’s Shayne Cramp (155).
Daryl (183) finished fourth to Alford (287), but he did spend an extended time out of the sulky after suffering serious facial injuries in a Ballarat race fall at the end of last season.
While the new season is only one week only, there are already signs that the Douglas team is determined to regain their top billings – with wins on the board from an already busy schedule.
Glenn lined up eight starters at Melton last night and has another five in Ballarat tonight.
Our Call Of Duty in the Peach’s Fruit Market C6/Better Pace, 2200m, and Narkoola in the Ken Ashmore Memorial C2-C3 Pace, 2200m, give the Douglas combination a strong hand on the 10-race program at Bray Raceway.
Our Call Of Duty has won two of his past three starts. Forgive his latest luckless run at Melton and from gate two the five-year-old should be prominent for a long time.
Narkoola is another which faltered in his latest start, but before that three wins in four outings suggests that he has the potential to be charging home late from a second row draw.
BALLARAT and District Trotting Club will recognise its 2012-13 season award winners tonight.
Hometown trainer Emma Stewart and reinsman Greg Sugars dominated their respective premierships.
Stewart retained the trainers’ title with 25 wins from 68 starters at Bray Raceway.
Sugars won 28 of 127 drives.
