BETHANY van Rossum celebrated her 18th birthday on Saturday and got to vote for the first time.
“I got home from school (on the day the election was called) and my dad told me I would be able to vote,” she said.
“He enrolled me soon after.”
The year 12 Damascus College student said she hadn’t paid much attention to politics before, only what she learnt in legal studies.
“I’d met Catherine King once at school – but that was it,” Bethany said. “I started paying more attention to the ads on TV, and things like that, to help learn.”
Although, it was her mum’s advice that helped her make the decision about who to vote for.
“Dad wouldn’t tell me who he votes for – but mum told me and why, and I voted the same as her.”
Bethany said she thought about voting below the line for her Senate ballot, but thought it would be too annoying for her parents to wait.
“Now I will probably take more of an interest in politics,” she said.
