ASHLEE Flintoft will contest national clay target championships in Wagga Wagga.
The Damsacus College Year 8 student is taking on the best nationally after a podium finish in the Victorian School Students Clay Target Championships in Bendigo.
She finished third in the junior girls' event with 19-30.
Flintoft had qualified for the state championships in the regionals at Noorat near Terang.
The 13-year-old from Napleons is only new to the sport.
She took it up after watching her older brother Jack, 16, competing.
"He was doing okay so I took it up."
Flintoft said she enjoyed physical and mental challenge, with plenty of concentration needed.
It is not unusual for her to go away from a competition with a swollen shoulder, caused by the backfire of her rifle.
The Flintofts are members of the Colac Gun Club.
While this means a bit of travelling for regular competitions, they have managed to find an alternation for practice.
"We've got a trap at home," Ashlee said.
Her achievement as earned her The CourierSportz Biz Junior Sports Star of the Week award.
She receives a $50 voucher courtesy of Sportz Biz, Ballarat.
