THE achievements of people of all abilities will be celebrated this Sunday when Ballarat’s first Walk With Me event takes over Lake Wendouree.
A national event, Dick Smith Walk With Me raises awareness that one in four Australians are impacted by disability.
Scope west general manager Kylie Payne said it was an opportunity for the community to walk alongside people with a disability and celebrate their achievements.
The event also raises money for Scope, a not-for-profit disability service provider.
Ms Payne said people with a disability wanted to participate in their community just like everyone else.
“It’s important for people to continue to understand that people with a disability can contribute to society and a community,” Ms Payne said.
City of Ballarat mayor and Walk With Me patron John Burt said the non-competitive walk was expected to attract a broad range of people with a disability as well as the general community.
The walk sets out from the Adventure Playground at Lake Wendouree at 11am on Sunday.
The day will finish with family fun activities, including face painting, a kids’ club and a barbecue.
People can support Walk With Me by walking, volunteering, fundraising or making a donation.
