DESPITE claiming more lives than the road toll each year, suicide still remains largely in the shadows.
Many Australians are touched by what is often a silent killer, with about 2300 people taking their own lives each year.
As part of World Suicide Prevention Day, the annual “Out of the Shadows” walk will be held this Saturday at the Ballarat Botanical Gardens.
The 1.6 kilometre walk will start at the pergola near Pipers by the Lake at 5am and progress through the gardens with stops for reflection.
Organiser and Ballarat police Leading Senior Constable Des Hudson said the walk was about raising awareness of suicide.
He said there would be an opportunity for people to have the names of their loved ones who had committed suicide read out.
“We encourage anyone who has been touched by suicide to come along and participate,” he said.
There will be a breakfast after the walk organised by the Rotary Club of Ballarat South.
