MUCH travelled group 1 winner Blucolla Tigerpie is the Victorian pacing mare of the year.
Blucolla Tigerpie was crowned at the Harness Racing Victoria state industry awards at Melton on Thursday night.
She headed up a big night for Ballarat.
Emma Stewart-trained colts Guaranteed and Major Secret were also honoured for performances last season.
Guaranteed was named three-year-old pacing colt/gelding of the year and Major Secret the two-year-old pacing colt/gelding of the year.
This gives Guaranteed back-to-back awards, having previously taken out the two-year-old award.
Blucolla Tigerpie won six of 12 starts last season, with her victories including the inaugural Ballarat lightning mile in 1:55.6, group 3 Ranji Bill Stakes at Menangle, Mother of Pearl and George Johnson in Tasmania, and Tailamade Lombo at Melton.
The Ranji Bill Stakes win secured her a start in the group 1 Ladyship Mile in Sydney, in which she finished sixth to Our Sixpence.
Blucolla Tigerpie’s trainer-driver Mick Stanley said he was particularly pleased for his father Ian, who bred the mare and races her in a family partnership.
“He’s right into the breeding side and this type of recognition is significant.”
Stanley said as well as being a flagship for his stable, Blucolla Tigerpie had taught him a great deal, especially about travelling interstate with a horse.
He said he had no special plans for Blucolla Tigerpie this season, but had earmarked the Ballarat Pacing Cup in January as a possible target for the six-year-old.
The daughter of Union Guy has been jogged up for eight weeks and Stanley hopes to get her to the trials within six weeks.
Major Secret won five races last season, including the Vicbred Super Series final for two-year-old colt and geldings, and Guaranteed won seven times, including the Vicbred Super Series for three-year-old colts/geldings, and Victoria and NSW Derby heats.
