CENTRAL Highlands Football League will name its rookie of the year tonight.
The Sportsmen’s Association of Australia Ballarat branch is again hosting the award dinner.
Twelve of the league’s 18 clubs have nominees – Ballan, Beaufort, Bungaree, Carngham-Linton, Creswick, Dunnstown, Gordon, Hepburn, Learmonth, Newlyn, Springbank and Waubra.
ZEB MORCOMBE (Ballan), 16 senior games in 2013
A former club under-17.5 best and fairest, he is as fearless.
He was named in the Blues’ best players eight times this season across half-back.
BEN UWLAND (Beaufort), 4 senior games in 2013
First season at senior level after playing under-17.5s.
As well as playing, the modest Uwland also helps the club as an umpire in junior games.
OLIVER HAYES (Bungaree), 3 senior games in 2013
First year out of juniors, he played predominantly as a ruckman, but also did play deep forward.
He has been a noted goalkicker throughout his junior years, kicking as many as 13 in one game.
JOE STALKER (Carngham-Linton), 11 senior games in 2013
Played the first nine senior games of the season, holding down the number one ruck position on most occasions.
SAMMY GIBSON (Creswick), 18 senior games in 2013
First full season at senior level after playing the one game in 2012.
A wingman named in best players four times, and capped off performances with 14 goals.
Also represented CHFL in under-18s.
BEN COLLINS (Dunnstown), 15 senior games in 2013
In his first full year of senior football after playing four times last year.
Stood up under pressure each week, using his pace to the fullest.
ADAM TOOHEY (Gordon), 17 senior games in 2013
Had a taste of finals football and complemented his season with 14 goals.
Versatile type who notched up 59 goals at under-18 level last year as well as 12 senior matches.
TOM CONROY (Hepburn), 13 senior games in 2013
A forward/ruckman who played in the Burras’ premiership team to round out a big year.
Multiple best and fairest at junior level, who made senior debut in 2011 – playing three in that year and another four in 2012.
JORDAN FRASER (Learmonth), 14 senior games in 2013
Season ended when he broke his hand. Kicked 24 goals playing forward pocket and wing.
Named in Lakies’ best seven times.
LUKE RELOUW (Newlyn), 13 senior games in 2013
Played seven senior matches last year, but took his career to another level this season.
He had a number of different roles, playing across half-back, midfield and as a small forward.
JOEL MAHER (Springbank), 19 senior games in 2013
Moving up from under-17.5 – where he was a CHFL and club best and fairest, and premiership player – he cemented a spot in the midfield.
With a season-high 18 tackles in one game Maher emphasised the work he puts into his fitness and strength.
ADAM DUFFY (Waubra), 14 games in 2013.
Was given a taste of senior finals in 2012 before moving into senior ranks full-time.
Had a best-on-ground, and completed on field contributions by helping around his club in areas such as the canteen.
