A REPORT on the future of Civic Hall to be considered by council next week recommends demolishing the building.
Mayor John Burt this afternoon briefed media on the report at Town Hall.
Mr Burt said ratepayers were tired of their money being used to fund investigations into the hall.
"We now need to make a decision," he said.
Mr Burt said he expected there would be opposition to any decision to demolish the hall and it would likely end up in VCAT.
Mr Burt said the cost of demolition could be $2 million and would not be completed for another year, if approved.
Mr Burt said he could not predict which way councillors would vote on the recommendation.
"I believe there will be strong debate within the chamber. I expect there will be public presentations before we even get to that," he said.
"A decision has to be made. You can't let this go on longer than it has already gone," he said.
