IT’S speed dating for winemakers and quaffers.
Ten of the Pyrenees region’s wineries will have 10 minutes to wine and dine a group of six judges, at the ten2one Speed Graze at Mitchell Harris Wine Bar, Doveton Street North on Wednesday evening.
Each will serve a meal with a taster of two wines. And just as in speed dating, a bell rings and the group of judges moves to the next winemaker, to be replaced by a new group.
After the 10 “mini-dates” the 60 judges will vote on which wine and food match is the best.
There is no formal prize as such. Just a bit of pride.
Amherst Winery winemaker Luke Jones says the real winners will be the 60 food and wine buffs who buy a ticket to attend.
“Some of the wineries might be treating it as a serious competition, but the main reason is to showcase wineries in the region and the local produce,” Mr Jones says.
“We will have two vintages of cabernet sauvignon with some beef from Sage Beef from down at Bannockburn.
“I will take it if we win it. There’s a people’s choice award at the end of the night but it’s mostly a bit of fun.”
William Talbot of Mount Avoca wines also describes the ten2one Speed Graze as “a bit of fun”, at least as a one-off event. However, as the concept grows that attitude might change.
“There are some pretty good wineries there, and every winery that is there wants to be called the best,” Mr Talbot said. “I’d like to see more of these events organised, perhaps two or three times a year.
“I think, if that happens, there will be some prestige in winning this type of thing.”
Mr Talbot is banking on shiraz to get the job done.
Meanwhile, Luigi and Atalie Bazzani of Warrenmang Vineyard will have a Bordeaux-style merlot-cabernet/france-cabernet/sauvignion-shiraz blend, along with an interesting mix of four Italian grape varieties for the competition.
“I have to say that the 10 winemakers involved all work together for the benefit region.
“It is a genuinely friendly rivalry,” Ms Bazzani says.
Tickets are $30.
