A GROUP of teenagers who lit a fire at the base of the Black Hill lookout threw bottles at police and fire crews before fleeing through neighbouring backyards and streets yesterday, police said.
Ballarat police Sergeant Brett Robinson said the group of six men and women, aged between 16 and 18, had been drinking at the location before lighting the fire about 4.20pm.
Sergeant Robinson said both fire and
police units had bottles thrown at them upon arriving at the scene.
He said the group then ran from police who were forced to give chase through backyards and streets.
“Two men were eventually arrested,” Sergeant Robinson said.
“One was a 16-year-old Ballarat male and the other an 18-year-old Ballarat male.”
He said both males were interviewed by police and were likely to be charged today.
Ballarat Fire Brigade senior station officer Neville Collins confirmed three fire
units responded to a call from a passer by who noticed smoke billowing from
the base of the lookout.
Mr Collins said the small grass and scrub fire was under control in a matter of minutes.
Police said the group would be charged.
