TWELVE months is a long time to wait for redemption.
Just ask Buninyong resident and Hawks fan Peter Tilborghs.
Just under a year ago, the 47-year-old looked on in horror as the Sydney Swans marched off with what he felt was Hawthorn’s birthright.
It was especially galling because the hapless Hawks had 26 scoring shots to Sydney’s 21 – ouch.
Now, 363 days later, Peter is confident the boys in brown and gold will finally set things right tomorrow.
“I’m very confident. More confident than last year,” he declares.
“We should have won it last year, and they didn’t. This year is all about completing the job.”
Peter has barracked for Hawthorn since arriving in Australia from Holland in 1982. Last year’s loss tested his faith more than most. He admits to (quietly) shedding a tear and contemplating giving it away.
But that was a long time ago now.
Last weekend, as the Hawks stormed home against the Cats, Peter was flying high.
“I was standing up, yelling at the telly,” he said. “Honestly, we weren’t going to even watch the grand final if Geelong had played in it. I can’t stand Geelong. I really can’t.”
