BALLARAT said its final farewells to the Victoria Police Pipe and Show Band after its last scheduled Ballarat appearance yesterday.
As part of a Lions Club fundraiser for Righteous Pups, the pipe and show band performed at Damascus College and raised $2000, which will allow another pup to be bought and trained.
Since the announcement earlier this month that the three police bands would no longer perform after this year, a support group has formed.
BandTogether has formed to gather signatures for a petition opposing the state government’s recent announcement.
BandTogether spokeswoman Mel Schoo said she was gaining hundreds of signatures at each concert.
“BandTogether believes that this decision is incorrect and is engaging in a number of initiatives to highlight the value of the bands as a community asset and fight for their retention,” Ms Schoo said.
The three police bands were formed in 1891 and perform about 600 times a year.
Band Leader Pat Hudson, who has been with the band for 21 years, said that over a recent three-month period the band had raised up to $300,000 for Victorian communities.
