TWO South Australian men have been charged with criminal damage after allegedly causing more than $20,000 damage to a Ballarat backpackers hostel last night.
The two men, aged 28 and 29, are believed to have been on a footy trip in Ballarat with their club from Tintinara.
Ballarat Criminal Investigation Unit Detective Senior Constable Angela Sorrell said the men had been drinking all day when they went back to the Ballarat Backpackers Hostel about 1am and allegedly began destroying the upstairs area.
Detective Senior Constable Sorrell alleged the pair "effectively grabbed everything in sight and threw it".
She said most items in the upstairs area, including toasters, kettles, jugs, microwaves and chairs, were allegedly smashed throughout the backpackers.
The cost of the damage, estimated to be around $20,000, could continue to rise as the owners add up the bill.
"There is also quite a bit of structural damage," Detective Senior Constable Sorrell said.
Adding that doors, walls, bench tops and plumbing were all allegedly kicked in.
The football team are believed to have left Ballarat this morning following the arrest of the two players.
Detective Senior Constable Sorrell said most of the team were "horrified" when they learned what their teammates had allegedly done.
Both men have been bailed to appear in Ballarat Magistrates Court on December 6.
