THERE were plenty of excuses being flung around prior to Run Ballarat as to why people weren’t competing.
“Sore foot,” one bloke was heard saying.
“I’m just not a runner,” a colleague told those listening in the office.
Well, after witnessing the efforts of one inspirational couple yesterday, there should be no more excuses next year.
Clem and Bev Newey completed the 6km walk for the second year running.
Not so impressive you say?
Clem is 87. Bev, 75.
The husband and wife duo were nothing but smiles as they crossed the finish line.
“We’ve given up our church activities for this today,” said Bev with a laugh.
“But I think it’s definitely worth it.”
Clem, who received a huge cheers as he pushed his walker over the line, said the cause spurred him along.
“I’ve had cancer once and I’ve got a pace-maker as well,” he said with a vice-like handshake.
“But that wasn’t going to stop me.”
Bev encouraged more people to get involved next year and said the money raised couldn’t got to a better cause.
“It’s helping out sick children and their families,” she said.
“It’s a terrific event.”
