SIXTEEN gravesites were left damaged by vandals at the Ballarat New Cemetery, causing thousands of dollars of damage.
The incident took place between 3.00pm and 4.00pm last Friday afternoon in the Bird Song area of the cemetery.
Police said a number of headstones, ornaments and vases were smashed and defaced.
The damage was discovered after a visitor reported a large number of taps within the grounds were left running.
A group of youths aged in their early teens were seen leaving the cemetery through the pedestrian gate onto Norman Street around 4.00pm.
