Richardson will take up his first coaching post at Maddingley Park but says coaching was an element he has been wanting to add to his game for a while.
The North Ballarat Roosters' premiership player has spent three years with North Melbourne, including last year on the Kangaroos' rookie list.
"I've learnt so muchfrom the AFL and event just trying to play at the highest level," Richardson said.
"From my point of view, it's a big challenge.
"I haven't had an assistant job before.
"Hopefully I can bring my experience and help the team improve."
The 25-year-old moved to Bacchus Marsh with his young family while with the Kangaroos and looked forward to representing his new hometown in the Ballarat Football League.
Richardson was drafted to North Melbourne in 2010 and played eight AFL games.
