THE festival of lights is coming to Ballarat.
Diwali, one of the most important dates on the Hindu calendar, will bring all its light and colour to the Ballarat Showgrounds on November 23.
As well as cultural events including Bollywood dancing and traditional plays, there will also be food stalls, a market and fireworks.
Painters will create a series of rangooli displays, a colourful decorative art form, which are typically presented as part of Diwali.
Organiser Amitabh Singh said the Ballarat event was about bringing cultures together and increasing understanding.
He said lights played a big part of the event in India, with many people decorating their houses with candles or fairly lights.
“The festival itself depicts the victory of good over evil. Light depicts knowledge and it is all about knowing different cultures,” he said.
“By knowing them and understanding them it gives good support to the general wellbeing of a multicultural society.”
