BALLARAT’S Joyce Ord knows how to celebrate a birthday in style.
Rather than settle for the traditional cake and candles, the 90-year-old celebrated the milestone with a two-wheel spin around Lake Wendouree.
Neighbour James Kerr said the motorbike ride was the least he and friend Noel Heard could do to help Mrs Ord celebrate her 90th.
“We’re neighbours and have become quite good friends and she invited us to her 90th birthday party on Sunday,” Mr Kerr said.
“At the party, she asked whether she could go for a ride, so we set it up.”
Mr Kerr and former neighbour Mr Heard responded to the call and took Mrs Ord on a joy-ride around Ballarat.
“We went up Sturt Street, over to the lake, around the lake and then ended up at the Lake View (Hotel),” he said.
“She had no problem (being on the bike) at all.”
Mrs Ord said it was the first time she had ridden on a motorbike in decades.
“My husband was in the air force and he used to have one,” she said.
“We used to carry our daughter around on the tank ... that would have been just after the war.”
A mad Carlton supporter, Mrs Ord thanked her neighbours Mr Kerr and Mr Heard for making her feel welcome after she moved from her family’s Buninyong farm several years ago.
“We’re now lifelong friends,” she said.
