WEBBCONA has caused the first major upset of the new Ballarat District Bowls Division midweek pennant season, defeating Central Wendouree’s A team in the second round of division one yesterday.
The windy conditions failed to hamper Webbcona on its home turf, with the club running out 78-64 victors in its first win of the year.
Skipper Betty Sanders labelled the win as “lucky”, despite Webbcona scoring comfortable wins in two of the three rinks.
“We didn’t really expect to win at all, but two of our stronger rinks got up, and it ended up being a great result for us,” Sanders said.
“We’re coming off a very difficult season where we were just trying to avoid relegation, but we have a few new faces around the place this year and the club is in a much better position this time around.”
Sanders’ rink lost to Central Wendouree’s Heather Hopkinson 20-26, but skippers Jenny Shepherd and Ann Cull both enjoyed victories.
Shepherd’s four triumphed over Kay Geddes’ four 30-19, while Gull’s rink outclassed Jill Kenyon’s rink 28-19.
Mt Xavier was the other big winner of the day, beating Avenue by the slimmest of margins, 71-70.
Mt Xavier’s skippers Joy Adams and Cath Ogg enjoyed wins, while Carmel Mitchell’s rink lost to Marie Russell’s 23-27.
In other matches Daylesford won all three rinks in its 79-65 win over Smeaton, Midlands secured a comfortable 82-48 win over Central Wendouree’s B side and Sebastopol beat Creswick 79-65.
